Wireless Routing 54mbps vs 108mbps

I know this may sound odd but what is the real difference in speed on the 2 rates above. Is it worth going for 108 or is the difference not really noticable?

thanks

Depends what you're doing. It won't make any difference if you have a Broadband connection to your surfing/download speed as the bottleneck would be with the Broadband line.

If you've got a home network and you transfer alot of files between PCs/Play Network Games then go for the faster speed.

What do you want to use it for? If it's just for an internet connection, there is no advantage going for the faster speed. The true throughput is a bit less than half the maximum quoted speed, so for file sharing on your own network, it can make a difference.

  • thanks you two. Its just to make my internet connection wireless and the 54 mbps router and usb adapters are a lot cfheaper than the 108. Didnt want a 54 speed one if they are massively different for my use. Sound like I should be ok with a 54 one. Thanks!

Anyone tried any of the 802.11n stuff yet, I've seen a 300mbps access point which sounds amazing compared to my 54mbps. It's taking me 45 minutes to create a 4GB backup DVD at the moment..
  • Can't you do it wired, which will give you a speed of 100, with none of the fluctuations of wireless. All these wireless speeds are theoretical maximums, you can't usually get anywhere near them outside the lab.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

HI -- for normal use --- any one will do.

The speeds quoted are transfer rates between the router and the PC.

So between PC's -- it will be half -- as the time will double.

You must understand that only the first 100 -- 200 MBs will get transferred at the full speed. This is the stuff that this loaded in the RAM. The reast would have to be loaded from the hard disk -- so that would be the limitng speed -- 30 - 40 mbps.

The best valvue is to go for the 54 mbps and reduce the QOS to 1% -( the service that keeps checking the quality of the wireless transmission) and get about 50 mbps real speed -- faster than your hard drive can spit out.

    Cheers

don't know what hard drive you're using but mine can 'spit out' more than 50mbps infact I can (with a wiredgigabit connection) can a throughput of around 30 megabytes per second
