Travel Insurance - do I really need Baggage & Cancellation cover??

Hi
I'm looking at travel insurance atm and have started to wonder if I really need to be comparing (or even worrying about) cancellation and baggage cover.
These are covered by European legislation now, so should I really be overly bothered about coverage within a travel insurance policy.
I do know that the overall price of a policy is not really affected by this i.e. it's as cheap to include cover as not, but just wondered if anyone had any opinions/advice?
Thanks

What european legislation covers you for cancelling your hols or getting something stolen?
If you have personal possessions cover away from home on your house contents insurance, you may find you are insuring your baggage twice with travel insurance.0 -
Well I realise that re: possessions, but it's if they have to cancel your flight I suppose I really meant and also baggage does seem to be covered under EU (AFAIK). Here's the link on EU site
http://ec.europa.eu/transport/passenger-rights/en/03-air.html
Don't get me wrong I wouldn't dream of going on hols without insurance,(and I fully intend to get it) but I genuinely wondered what people thought.
Maybe I'm missing something....?0 -
There are so many posts on the board re insurance and cancellation
especially frrom people who leave the travel insurance till just a few days before they leave then post here weeks before saying they have problems in that Mother has cancer, father is going for a major operation, they have broken both their arms 2 weeks before the holiday and its too late but they still ask for help re insurance
The lesson is clear, as soon as you book your holiday, take out insurance.
As another poster says, if you have personal possession cover on your household insurance you dont need this on your travel insurance or you are paying for it twice. Its probably only a couple of quid but its your couple of quid and x by the amount of people who dont realise it the Ins. companies are making a killing out of it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Yes, there are various types of cancellation.
One if where you can't travel due to medical issues or something happens to someone close to you.
If they died and you need to go to the funeral or they became serious ill then you wouldn't want to travel.
For this you need cover from booking as you could break your leg when you walk away from the travel agents.
There is no legislation for personal sickness/accident or that of family members only for say airline cancellation.
You don't need baggage cover if you have all your personal posessions covered on your house insurance but this isn't automatic.
You need to check if you have the personal possessions option, whether the limit if high enough and whether the single item limit is high enough, but essentilaly yes, not reason to pay twice for that.0
