Need cheap car - recommendations?

Oh dear

My Estima is blowing out more smoke than a bar full of Frenchmen. I think the head's cracked (common on these) and, given the age/value of the car, it's likely to be terminal. I've had the car for seven years and had 100,000 miles out of it so can't really complain.

I don't have much "cash on the hip" at the moment so am after something to use for a year or so as a replacement. It needs to be an auto (wife has a disability) and capable of towing a biggish caravan so at least Mondeo-sized.

Any recommendations for what to look at in the "up to £1500" bracket? Not too fussed about age/looks/luxuries/mpg for this one; reliability is more important.
Can I help?

  • How about a passat tdi. The older 1.9 tdi, pre N reg would do a reliable job and give you economy. Finding an auto could be a problem though. Otherwise a Merc 190 diesel. Plenty of auto's there.

Thanks. I was looking on eBy and spotted a Volvo V70 Torslanda for sale about a mile away. It was an auto and came with a towbar so a deal was done. It was more than I'd intended to pay but I suppose cost is more important than price.
What's alarming is that I now have four cars of which this is the smallest
    Must clear some drive space!

Good choice, they are a bargain for what they come with. Madness
