Brother printer - print quality problem

Hi, can anyone help please?

My print quality has become poor, particularly every third line. On some lines of text, there is a 'blank' line through the text, and the third line has several of these and looks slightly italic.

Do you know what the problem is?

if not, here's some info/questions which I think may be relevant(!!): :)
  • where is the printer head on a brother (on the printer or individual in the cartridge?)
  • Is it possible that it's the ink causing the problem? I am using a compatible cartridge. I could understand that being an issue if that's where the print head is, but if not, can't see how ink would be an issue.
  • I had recently changed the cartridge, but it has printed off about 20 sheets before the problem arose.
  • I took the cartridge out and replaced it, so the printer ran a clean. It is improved, but still not right. Could it just need repeated cleaning to correct?
  • The 20 or so prints I did immediately before were copies of A-Z page maps - could that fine printing have caused a problem?
  • The printer is about 2-3 months old

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Thanks, I've just found the ink management button on the machine!!

I had been trying to get to it via the PC in printer properties.

  • I've tested this out a bit this morning.

I;ve printed sheets of text, with paragraphs in different colours. It's only the black which is affected......and the colours are still the original cartridges. So, unfortunately, it's the compatible cartridge which is causing the problem. I will run a clean often to try to prevent it causing any damage, whilst I wait to replace it.

    Next question.....

Do you think it will be the cartridge itself (it's slightly different in design to the original. The original has a plastic 'funnel' where the ink comes out, the compatible has a kind of pad which was covered by a (now punched thru) thin plastic cover.)

    Or - the ink inside?

The reason I ask is that the original carts are expensive, so I could consider refilling it. But if it's cheap ink thats causing the trouble, I'd be in the same position as I am now.
