Auction sniper tools - a warning

For anyone considering using third party software to place bids on eBay, think very carefully about the security of the software that you're using before you hand over your username and password. On the whole, these programs totally lack the high level of encryption and security that eBay have always used on their site.
Now and again you hear from people who have had their accounts hijacked, even though they've been very careful about ignoring phishing e-mails etc, which makes me wonder if third party software being hacked could be one explanation for their account being compromised. Of course for the vast majority, these programs are probably very safe, but personally I would feel very uncomfortable about handing over my eBay account details to a third party, no matter how small the risk.

Which is why I pay for mine, as that provides the developer enough money to invest in security

I think if these sort of programmes were being hacked we'd hear about an awful lot more people's accounts being stolen, I imagine it's something else to be honest.
I've used one for about a year and a half with no problems at all, you just have to be senisble about which one you pick.

The thing is, people's accounts are being hijacked every single day, and when you see how 'homemade' looking the interface is on some of these free programs, for me alarm bells would have to start ringing and I'd keep my account details to myself. Bear in mind that if there was ever a security breach, no matter how small, the software company at fault would likely never publicize it, and it wouldn't be traceable to them.syanide wrote:Well I've used auction sniper for around 2 years on my buying account without a problem..sprintstar wrote:Of course for the vast majority, these programs are probably very safe0

Agreed - which is why I use JBidWatcher (http://www.jbidwatcher.com). It runs locally on your PC so you never have to give you eBay password to anybody.sprintstar wrote:For anyone considering using third party software to place bids on eBay, think very carefully about the security of the software that you're using before you hand over your username and password.Philip0 -

Hmmm - works fine for me. Can you try again, and if you still have a problem I'll contact the site's owner.devon-gnome wrote:(http://www.jbidwatcher.com) 'server not found'.
