what is the best permanent dark brown colour you used

I had my hair highlighted, bleached and coloured and everything...
Now I want it dark brown/or ash subtle black but can't risk it to turn jet black or brassy (can't afford correction, hairwise and otherwise)
I used some dark colours (Garnier and Loreal ) and they seem to wash out , even the permanent ones :eek::eek:
I heard Feria is good? I am going to deep condition my hair before..
Any advice would be much appreciated xxx

  • You'll find that whatever you use it won't last until the hair grows back. I have the same problem, my hair is naturally dark brown but had dark blonde highlights for 2 years and I have to keep dying my hair every 4 months to cover them up. My hairdresser's uses Wella, she says it lasts longer than the one you buy off the shelf.
  • Derma v10 Brilliant Ten from Savers in Dark Brown. It's awesome and only £1.99 and comes with a comb applicator thing so you can spread the colour easier.

Nice n Easy seems to fade less than other brands:) Choose a colour a couple of shades lighter than the colour you want as they always turn out darker and try to get a colour with the word ash in the description as this will minimise red tones, I use Light Ash Brown 114 to give me a medium dark brown colour:)

on another forum i notice nice and easy 118 was recommended several times, had a look in boots, its a dark brown, nothing special but i might try it in a few weeks, currently bright red, but fed up with the roots and fading.
  • I don't know if you have considered using the dye that hairdressers use? I get mine from Sally Hair (I think they have various shops up and down the country)

I buy the Very Dark brown by ion colour solutions number 2 which is 1 shade before black and mix it with Teknique basic creme peroxide 6% at a ratio of 1 part colour to 1.5 part peroxide. It works out so much cheaper than going to the hairdressers and buying the shop bought boxes.

    Hope this helps :)

I agree with glowgirl. Nice n Easy is good but all brands I've tried have gone too dark, so you need a couple of shades lighter. I remember using Garnier 100% in Darkest Brown and it turned my hair black (although I probably had it on a bit longer than I should as well!) Luckily it washed out a little eventually and turned dark brown. If this happens Head and Shoulders shampoo is great for stripping the colour.

Other brands I've liked are Garnier Nutrisse and L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss.

I use the Live XXL (Schwarzkopf) in Bittersweet Chocolate and it comes out almost black but not quite. It's def not as 'reddy' as it looks on the box! It makes my hair really shiny and lasts really well!

I second the L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss - I like the Chocolates range of colours, although these do have reddish tones. Always get compliments when I use Iced Chocolate, for instance. Although not a permanent colourant, it certainly lasts the four weeks until the roots kick in again.
