Acer V Fujitsu Siemans Laptop.Advice needed!

Options
Hi there I am stuck choosing between two laptops. One is the FUJITSU SIEMEN AMILO 7320G(here) and the other is this Acer(Acer Aspire 1642ZWLMi) which has a similar spec.

I am keen to find out what the difference between the two companies are. Which company has the better reputation and will be easier to deal with incase a fault develops with the laptop?

I may also be purchasing extra warranty so this is the reason I would like to know. Both laptops are the same price but I would rather buy a laptop off a company with better reputation.

Thanks for any help in advance!

As the previous poster said, Acer have a good warranty in regards to purchasing their warranty packs, be aware thought that you need to purchase it within 3 months of purcashing the laptop. They go for about £30 on ebay iirc. If you send your acer away for repair, expect for it to be away for anywhere between 1 and 3 months, they aren't that quick and always busy for some reason. Make of that what you will.

As for fujitsu-siemens their support seems to be limited to this: http://support.fujitsu-siemens.com/forum/index.php?sid=82103c1d51fac23e6782b5757e8103bb which as you will probably note is more 'owners helping owners' you're only likely to attract the attention of someone in 'support' if you phone them or insult the brand on the above site.

Good luck with whichever laptop you choose.
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

Thanks both of you for that. I have changed the Acer link above and they both have same spec except one is Pentium M(Acer) and other is celeron(FS).

In your opinion which one is the better value for money.....or can you find a better Acer laptop for around £400 region?

    Thanks

  • A lot of people on here seem to have hardware problems with Acer, never used one myself so can't comment from personal experience, but they do crop up in this forum a bit more often than they should.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Staples have/had a much better spec Fuji with the latest pentium core processor for the same price, can't find it on their site, but that doesn't show most instore offers.

From memory they also had some reasonably priced Gateway laptops, worth a look.

What are you going to be using these laptops for exactly? If you are going to want to be portable, then weight is a factor. Likewise if you actually want to use your laptop whilst mobile, weight and battery life are major factors. On a Pentium M, you're looking at about 3 - 4 hours worth of battery life if you turn off the backlight, suspend the harddrive after 15 minutes etc. I know as I have pretty much the same spec, but would you believe it in the fujitsu-siemens amilo range which offer upto 6 hours battery life. Though this is dependant upon what you're using the laptop for.

I loaned one to a friend and he is often stood in the middle of a field reading his email eating his lunch before he begins plotting out his latest build. He seems quite happy with the laptop, at least I assume he is. As I've hardly seen it since I purchased the thing :D AIUI he runs some arhitectural program which is quite battery intensive, so it's reduced to about 2 hours. But for general email, writing notes\reports etc he gets near to 6 hours. This is my experience also, as I have one in the lounge for email\browsing and checking tv listings etc and it also gives me 6 hours usage running opera with everything turned off ie: backlight, wifi, screensaver etc and power saving on. Which may explain why http://prices.cnet.co.uk/0,39100483,29062797,00.htm only get 2 hours battery out of their equivalently specified laptop, as they have all the options turned on I assume.

These specifications aren't really for demanding games, so HL2 is out for instance and you may need to increase the memory to get the best out of them.

Fwiw, I would go with the Pentium M. Unless you can find a store with this in stock: http://www.unbeatable.co.uk/product/Acer-TravelMate-2414WLMi-4718235427054-PC-Laptop/34712787.html
