wii remote - mario kart won't turn left/right

Hi,
I'm having trouble with one of my wii remotes. Ive put new batteries in it, I can point at the tv, press A etc - I can move mario backwards and forwards, but not left or right? I've tried pressing the sync buttons (both at same time and separately) but it makes no difference (i found out about sync'ing it on here).
Has my remote had its day? or is there something else I should be doing/doing differently?
