How much to lower a ceiling?

The wife wants to convert our attic but we only have 6ft 6 clearance at the peak of the pitched roof. We can gain 18 inches by lowering the ceiling but I think this would cost a small fortune. The space is roughly 30ft by 16ft. Anyone able to give me a rough idea of cost?

If you mean lowering the ceilings in the bedrooms to gain extra loft space it would be very expensive if at all possible, you would have to lower the support beams, which would incur removing brickwork around the internal walls of your house to rebed the beams into. You would need new ceilings in every upstairs room, replastering the damaged areas of wall, then you would also have to take into account other obstructions like windows for example (if appropriate) for the sake of 18inches I would envisage a lot of work and expense!0

Exactly what I thought. The wifes still got it in her head though. Maybe if I tell her she's got to pay for it that'll put her off!!
