Scam banking emails

Hi all. I feel stupid even having to ask this, but I can't afford to mess up, so just wanted to check if anyone had received any emails from membership@hsbc.co.uk?
I've had a few, from someone called 'Collette Nugent' who does appear to be a real employee of HSBC: one says that there have been several unsuccessful login attempts to my account, another says 'we suspect your account may have been accessed by an unauthorised computer'
It's my pension, so I'd rather nobody messed with it. However I am 99% sure this is spam, since it's not what banks normally do. Am I right?

Most likely. Does it include a very dodgy looking link to click on to access your account?0

Don't touch and barge pole spring to mind. If you want to check your account online, then use your usual url. Don't follow a link from an email. If they had concerns they would probably phone you like barclays did with me the other day0

the from address means nothing, you can forge that header quite easily and it's down to the effectiveness of your e-mail server's spam filtering to discern as to whether or not the message really came from the domain in question or not.
if the e-mail is real, next time you use your online banking, you'll find you're locked out. regardless, don't reply to it, just delete it.0 -
Use the real site to login and if its true you will be locked out0

Probably but I get loads from many banks wth 99.9% appearing to come from banks I don't have an account with and that icludes HSBC.hedgehopper wrote: »I've had a few, from someone called 'Collette Nugent' who does appear to be a real employee of HSBC:
No doubt she is - if it signed off by "A. Fraudster" its not really going to look like the real thing !hedgehopper wrote: »one says that there have been several unsuccessful login attempts to my account, another says 'we suspect your account may have been accessed by an unauthorised computer'

Nope your wrong.
Its 100%.
As others have said go the the HSBC website by typing in their address manually in your browser and logging in from there. DOn't use the link in the e-mail.

I see this all the time. When people get a phishing email from a bank they don't bank with, they instantly know that it's a scam. But soon as they get one from a bank they do bank with they think it must be genuine!0

I don't recall, in my 10 years of online banking, any time *my* bank the have genuinely emailed me. They just don't do it. I'm not sure if other banks actually *do* email their customers requesting that they log in - but I've not seen it myself.
Basically if you are emailed by 'your' bank out of the blue, and it's not trying to sell you anything, chances are it's a phishing scam.0 -
I received the same mail and have forwarded it to HSBC security department0

Halifax including your postcode when they email you, so you know its legit. But still they never direct you to links to login to your account0 -

Well Barclaycard e-mail me each month to say my statement is ready to view - and include a link. I never use it - but the e-mail is genuine enough0
