Comparison sites - companies you've never heard of?

I did a check for my partner's car insurance. His own company have quoted 539 for renewal, this includes legal cover, accident cover and courtesy car.
As a comparison, Im with aviva so i asked them over the phone for a quote for him, that came out at 416 without the extras. Online I also did a quote for aviva, that came out at 372 with the extras.
On comparisons sites the lowest we found without the extras was 341. This is with a company called 'the insurance factory'. There were lots of other lowish quotes with simarlarly unknown companies.
What do others think about this. do you go for the lowest quote on a company you have heard of or do you go for the lowest that suites your needs??

Always check the company out by searching on here and generally for complaints and review first.
I have used unknown named insurers before, luckily never had to claim with one though.0
