Right to cancel the hire of a hat

Hi,

My mum booked to hire a hat on Saturday (5 days ago) however she was uncertain at the time (and said this to the shopkeeper) and now she's come home she's certain it won't go having seen the shoes she wants it to match. The event it is hired for is not for another 30 days, and the hat is kept in the shop, doesn't have to be ordered in. She has asked to cancel but the shop has told her she is not entitled to any of her money back, is this correct?

Your Mum is not entitled to a refund. A refund would be a goodwill gesture.

I was discussing exactly the same thing with my mum at the weekend, She paid to hire a hat and then changed her outfit. She wasn't entitled to a refund. I told her I'd have been in and collected the hat, just so they couldn't hire it to anyone else.
