Help me decide on a new printer (please)

I bought this wireless one on special offer from john Lewis. They were selling it for £100 including 3 spare colour cartridges.(worth about £40. I was using an epson which I could buy cheap cartridges at about £2 each. I am sorry I bought it. The print quality is excellent but the cartridges really expensive. I thought I'd be able to buy cheap copies- but they are chipped and if you use copies you have to remove the chip from the old one- then glue them on the new one. I ran out of black . - ordered a new one , not realising there are 2 black types. both are photsmart 364, but one is the colour black and the other , the colour photo black- which will not fit in the printer, I did not realise this and opened the cartridge so cannot return it - it was the large size so £25 thrown away. How stupid for hp to make these with the same code 364.
I wish I had stayed with the epson. In addition my better half allowed HP to download updates and since then it would not print. I have had to get a computer engineer in, to fix it. He said updates come from america and sometimes get corrupted on the way. He advised is not to let it download any more updates. That was more money getting him in.
So my advice would be to find a printer that you can buy cheap copy cartridges for- look on the internet for models after a search on ink. Also one printer I had, had all the black and colurs in one cartridge. If you ran out of one colour, you had to buy a new cartridge with the 3 colours and black in it- a big waste. Find one with separate cartridges= good luck0 -

Your comment about the HP software is why I would never buy another HP printer again no matter how good it was and how cheap to run. The HP disk doesn't just load a print driver it loads a whole host of unwanted software. It has modified Internet Explorer in various ways, broken dialogue boxes now pop up on startup and the thing is always trying to download updates and get me to load more software. From looking on the net I don't seem to be the only one with this issue.
Such a shame HP have totally ruined their reputation for some of us because of a software issue when you are buying a simple piece of hardware.0 -
Well I paid £40 for my HP Photosmart all-in-1 @ Tesco (Turkish import I think) - got my start up 2 carts. Paid £14.99 for a twin pack (black and colour) from Play.com -- I am extremely happy!!
I don't print alot, an odd letter or web wage each month so the cost of ink isn't my primary concern as the start up cost...
I've had no problems with the HP software. All I get is a box to enable a drop to print facility.
If you don't have access to Which - pay a £1 for a months trial and you can get ther opinion. Cancel within your first month. I rec'd 2 magazine that were interesting.0 -
One thing to remember is how much ink is in the cartridge ??? a lot of people think that buying an in cartridges is like buying a pint of milk one pint of milk will hold the same amount of milk as another but it is not the same with ink cartridges ?
people think that 1 ink cartrdige is the same as another but they are not.
Epson original TO711/2/3/4 all have 5.5ml of ink in them and are about £6 each the compatibles i buy have 13ml of ink in them for £1.79 each so over double the amount of ink for less than a third of the cost of the original cartridges.
i can buy compat cartridges at my local market for £1 each but they only hold 3ml of ink.

Could you let me know where you buy the Epson compatibles from please?0 -
Epson compatibles are cheap online www.buytech.co.uk they often have offers where cartridges are 79p each , and I recently bought one of their bundles 4 x complete cartridges (all 3 colours and black) for £19.99 delivered which works out cheaper than buying one complete set of say Supermarket own brand .
Forgot to mention i think they are the 13ml cartridges - not the smaller 5ml that only last 5 mins when the kids start printing pictures from the CBBC website lol:jDoing my bit :jCompetition prizes won 2011 ( still waiting )0 -

Your father pedals car telephones at a 300 percent markup. Your mother works on heavy commission at a camera store. Graduated to it from espresso machines. Hah!0 -
Wow! Thanks for all the great advice. I think I have decided to go for the Canon Pixma MP640. I have used Shopbot and it seems to be around £130 most places (amazon etc) but I have found it for £110 (inc delivery) from Omnishop.eu Bit wary of using them though as I've never heard of them before. Would you swallow the £20 extra cost to go with a better kinown retailer?0

16 carts for £19.99 inc delivery works out at about £1.00 each tel me what make they are and i can tell you what the contents are a lot of re sellers advertise there cartridges hold hore than the originals but if an original has 5.5ml of ink in them and the compats only have 6ml they are not telling any lies but aint doing you any favours.
