Can I give notice if I've already been given notice?

This may sound really dumb but I've been given notice to move out my current home by the 3rd of October, so I'm liable for rent up until then. But if I was to find somewhere say tomorrow would I be able to give 4 weeks notice even though I've already been given notice. so just be liable for the next 4 weeks rent?

I've found a great house but if I want it I have to let the agent know asap. I can't really be waiting around until beginning of Oct to be able to move into it.

Thanks in advance!

You can give one rental period [normally a month] notice to end at the end of your fixed rental period or at the end of any rental period thereafter.

Check your contract, you may have already missed the chance to end it on 3 September.

So in other words as long as I'm on a periodic tenancy then yes I can give once months notice even though i've already been given notice?

I need it in simple terms :D

    I started renting 27/3/09.

Des that mean I've already missed it? Will I now be liable for rent up until the 27th of Sept?

    I'm afraid so.

I'd still check the contract, since their 2-month notice ends on a different date for some reason.

Not that I understand much of it I'll check it anyway :D
I'm going in to see my current agent in the morning so I'll ask then, hopefully the landlady will take pity and agree to us leaving beginning of Sept.

Sorry, I meant your notice should expire on the same date as your rental period, presumably 27 (if the rental agreement says so), but their 2-month notice expires on the 3rd of October. It seems your LL can choose any date to give notice.

When you started renting how long was your agreement? Mine was only 6 months but kept on renting for two 19months but only had to give one months notice of termination even though the landlord wanted longer, i sent to a solicitor and i was within my rights only to give 1 months notice as that was what was stated in my original agreement.
Not sure if that helps hope it does!
