Hmmmmm does she have any old wellies? Lollo Rosso lettuce can be sown now. One in each would look interesting! Buy a box of marrowfat peas ( about 20p) and plant a row of those in a window box. When they are about 5 inches high she can eat them on salads and sandwiches ( pea shoots) Radishes are quick and easy too. Good for her to have a relaxing, inexpensive and exciting hobby.

Cut and come again lettuce is good-easy and rewarding. How about growing some houseplants to give at Christmas? Or, in a couple of months, plant an acorn or a conker, and sneakily transplant outside in a hedge when it's big enough.
