Is there any way change to IP address on Wireless network

I use Telewest broadband and a Linksys wireless router to allow my laptop and pc to have wireless access to the internet.

Is there any way to change the IP address so that websites cannot tell you have registered twice from the same address? Sometimes my partner likes to do things in her own right but it causes problems if we have both used the same IP address.

Any help much appreciated.

If your isp had dynamic ip addressing (as I think most do) you can simply reboot the router and you'll usually get a different ip address assigned to the router.

  • You can always use a proxy, there are hundreds of proxies which can be used for free. If you want real anonymous surfing then go for TOR, it is not very simple to use but will solve all your problems of being tracked. http://tor.eff.org/
  • If you are using a Linksys Router then you should be ok.

I suspect that you have your broadband connection plugged into the WAN port on the router; all you need to do is go into the config of the router and create a DHCP scope. Say for example; a scope for two IP addresses; pointless having more; and provides a degree of security; whilst in the router; once the two machines are connected switch off SSID broadcasting and see if you can implement MAC filtering. This will provide more security for you.

Anyway; to continue. Once you have a DHCP scope setup on your router; go to your computer, click on START > go to RUN > type in CMD and then click on OK. Once the DOS (black box) pops up type IPCONFIG /ALL. If it says Dhcp Enabled, you should be ok; if it says disabled; then you will need to go to the network settings on your computer.

    How to get there..
    START>CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK CONNECTIONS.
Highlight your device(wireless); right click; click on Properties; highlight TCP/IP; Properties, hit radio button; obtain an IP address automatically, apply; ok..
  • That won't change the external IP address, just the local one.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
