Short Term Car Insurance / Cancellation Periods

Having just bought a new car, I've swapped my insurance over. But I'm planning on selling my old one privately, so I need short term cover for that one.

I've been getting quotes and I'm horified by the price of it. Adding it to my existing (£27 per month) policy for 30 days will cost me £75, so I took a look at a "specialist short term" provider online and they quoetd me, get this, £280 for a month. That's about what it would cost for a year!

Next I thought "what about getting a new policy and then cancelling?", but reading up on that the cancellation fees etc mean it ends up being very costly again.

However, while reading up about cancellatoin fees I came across teh fact that you have 14 days form the start of the policy to change your mind and cancel.

So then I thought, is there anything to stop you just doing that and getting 2 weeks free insurance, presuming you don't have to claim? Presumably it would be legal and you would still count as having been insured for that period?

I can't see any draw-back, but it seems a bit too easy.

In theory you could then just move onto another company and, if you could be bothered to put the effort in every week, never pay for insurance. This doesn't seem likely, so I guess there is a catch.

Would it count as fraud if it was proved that you went into the policy planning to cancel it?

Presumably this would be relatively easy to prove for a "serial offender" as above, but if you just do it once to get a couple of weeks cover, they can't really prove anything?

Or is the whole idea fatally flawed in a way I've not thought of?
