I have my car MOT'd at my dealer (Peugeot) who failed it on "Centre exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases", which is fine I was expecting it, it's been blowing for months. However they quoted £201.12 inc Vat + labour. I always ring around other garages for comparison and am very confused to find nationwideautocentres quoting £31.87 and a local garage quoting £47 exactly for the same job (I read out word for word what the MOT failure sheet says). So all I want to know is how much should a job of this nature cost?

Does the centre section include that CAT or is that a separate part?

Did their price include the CAT?

The cat has only recently been replaced

Sorry, I edited my post :D

Main dealers will always charge more for labour, plus they use genuine parts whereas the likes of Nationwide and local garages will use pattern parts, hence they can do it cheaper.

I'd never let a main dealer do my exhaust, I'd take it to a decent local garage.

Is original quote (£201) for an original Peugeot exhaust? The others certainly won't be. I would probably go with the cheaper ones but they will not last as long.

The other question is what sate is the reest of the exhaust? I have amade the mistake of replacing a section only to return a few days later to replace the rest.

I think pattern parts are normally guaranteed for 3 years and probably wont last much longer than that. My car is 10 years old and still on the original exhaust. Unless you plan on keeping your car forever the pattern part (fitted correctly) will be fine.

All the other sections have been replaced, they went at different times, back went first, front inc cat last year, now centre, none of the other replacements were peugeot parts so I'm not keen to spend that much on something that's going to corrode anyway. I tend to only let them deal with the engine.

I got back, middle & front sections (excluding cat) replaced on my 206 in June for £135 at a local garage. It comes with a 2 year guarantee too (whether that is worth anything).
