Cash Machine Charges in Jersey

Hi all,

First time poster on this board so sorry if this has been asked already.

I'm going on holiday to Jersey next week and was worried about taking money out from the cash machines there.

I know they will take normal English notes and coins even though they have their own but do the cash machines count it as a foreign transaction. The reason I ask is that mobile phone companies count it as a foreign call/data charge so thought the banks might do the same.

Thanks in advance

The machines are part of the LINK network.
You may get local or BOE notes from them.

I know the credit card transactions at the point of sale are not deemed as foreign transactions but did not use debit cards when there. Just be careful that a lot of cash machines in Jersey will only dispense Jersey notes, which you will find difficult to exchange when you are back in the UK i.e. you are better off using your credit card when there and taking just an adequate amount of cash.

You are best of taking a good amount of english money as most atms only give jersey notes. And no they dont charge you :)

I wouldn't loose too much sleep if you do get Jersey / Guernsey notes as you can simply pay them back in to your account free of charge.

I was last in Jersey about 7 years ago, so things may have changed.

If you are in St Helier and use a main bank branch (e.g. head office of RBS International), then there are two machines: one dispenses English notes, the other Jersey notes. Machines elsewhere tend to only give Jersey notes.

On your last few days, spend your Jersey notes and specifically ask for English notes as change. Also refuse pound notes and ask for coins instead. Most places will oblige, especially bars/supermarkets.

If you do come back with any Jersey notes, your bank should take them off you. RBS allowed them to be paid straight into my account at my local branch in England.

yes, we went last week, and we simply spent the jersey notes before we returned home. If you want a nice restaurant I can really reccomend Feast on the quayside at Gorey, wonderful food, service and location.
