perhaps you saw that a passport could be used for ID in the list of stuff that can be provided if electronic ID is not possible.

Fair enough but TBH it is hassle free opening this account, I was expecting hassle but surprisingly is was straightforward.
FWIW I opted for the monthly interest option at 2.87% after tax @ 20% is deducted.0 -
Just an update on this account, I posted my maturing Chelsea fixed account passbook to transfer to this new bond on Wed evening and I have just checked on-line to find the money in the account and earning interest. Fairly quick IMHO.
