Liability to pay for escaped gas?
My daughter recently moved house and had her gas boiler, but not gas fires, serviced by Powergen before the supply was turned on.
She later discovered that the pipe to one gas fire had been leaking gas outside the house since she moved in and turned on the gas supply. (It seems to have been incorrectly disconnected by someone for the previous owner).
Anyone know if she is liable to pay for the escaped gas? She had a bill for £300 so it is a substantial sum.
Thanks for any advice.
John

Hello John,
The gas leak encountered would have to be investigated by the transporter (company responsible for the pipes, not the supplier). This is usually XoServe (used to be Transco).
If there was a leak, they would know...it would be best to contact them as effectively the readings will show the gas has been used, which is not the suppliers fault.
I would certainly advise your daughter to contact XoServe or her transporter. If not, her supplier will know who to contact.
Hope that helps.

If the leak is outside - It will not go through the meter.
If the leak is inside - Transco will say its your responsibility (sp) to maintain pipes.
If you called them out because it was an emergancy they would just cap the gas and tell you to call a corgi registerred engineer. We have this at work all the time. Its tough but they rarely give out compensation for leaks at all.0 -
?Hi Guys...British Gas are the same, If its outside the property and not going thru the meter then you will not have been charged, if inside and after the meter, then you will have to get the pipe work looked at by a corgi reg engineer...Just a little quicky for u...a slow gas leak, eg the one that you may sniff once in a blue moon, may cause about 50p worth of charges over the year...it would only take 1 unit of gas to flatten your house and the neighbours, so energy company will usually give you a fiver or somthing, since you are responsable for the pipe work on the inside..
Hope this helps
AndyHey folks...remember I might work for the company but I am a human and working in my own time, I will not responde to people who are rude, sarcy and crits me. My views and comments do not reflect British Gas and they are totally unreasponsable for my responses.0 -

Bang on. lol one unit of gas is all it will take to total your house. All pipes after the meter are the owners property. No one will give you compo for any gas leak on one of them pipes. sorryFiliss0
