Going camping - what food to take to save £

Going camping for a week. I have a electric cool box to take as we have electric supply. I am going to have to choose carefully which chilled foods/snacks/prepared food to take. Any suggestions?

Tinned Chilli cooks quickly in one pot, put on the table for everyone to help themselves to and a stack of tortilla wraps. easy, not much washing up, pretty cheap and no special storage requirements. I love this for camping.

Is it cold enough for meat? if it is i'd take burgers, bacon, sausage, butter and cheese (use long-life milk for tea/coffee/cereal) possibly sausage rolls and picnic eggs.
Then tins / packets for the non-cold stuff. I've also found that a bucket of cold water refilled once or twice a day keeps milk and cans nicely cold for drinks.

It rather depends what the weather is like but the old methiod of keeping stuff cool was a bucket in the shade with a cloth soaked in water over the top. The evaporating water cools the contents. This is enough to keep things like butter, vegetables cool for several days.

If you take stuff frozen and keep it in the cool box, you wil lengthen its life by a couple of days, but be very careful about defrosting meats contaminating other things..

    Hi,

We regularly camp with just a cold box.

We usually have a rotisserie chicken on the first night.

    Other meals may be :
HM chilli with boil-in-the-bag rice / wraps and salad
    HM curry with BITB rice
    HM beef stew with mash
    HM chicken tagine with couscous
HM tuscan bean stew with bread

We also BBQ some nights, gammon steaks, burgers, sausage, chicken kebabs with bread and salad. After the meat is cooked we use the BBQ coals to boil the kettle for drinks and hot water bottles, and put potatoes wrapped in foil in to bake for supper - the best you've ever had! oh, and bananas in their skins for pudding.

Packet soup is a good standby for a supper if it gets cold. We usually have either danish or bacon butties for breakfast.

The best way is to use chicken dishes first, then beef, then veggie dishes. Buy fresh meat and bread locally.

A wok is a great bit of kit for camp cooking, as the thin steel doesn't take much heat and cooks quickly.

Couscous and boil in the bag rice are the best carbs, aside from BBQed jackets, as they cook so quickly and use less gas.

Noodles, mirconoodles or whatever they are called. I think sainsbury's do their own for about 7p a packet. All you need is a saucepan and hot water.
