We used a socket tester which indicated the socket is OK. Haven't tried a different socket yet. The MCB in the consumer unit blows (I have to reset the main switch).

So it could be the circuit is at fault, it could be the plug. Or an earth leakage fault in the machine.
Check the plug and retest on a different ring main (using an extension lead).

Interesting development this morning-plugged the washer into a different socket......and it works perfectly! When DS pulled the washer out to unplug it he remarked that the plug was "nearly out of the socket". Could it simply that this was causing a disconnection?

It can, those MCB's are sensitive to power fluctuations/spikes. Good luck with it and many more happy washing years.
Edit Feel the door when next on a hot wash, is it warm or only doing a cold wash? Replace element.

So now try another device on the same socket-you may have a fault in the socket or ring main.
Did you plug it into the same ring main or a different one, as suggested?

I hope so. I feel very relieved at not having to spend a lot of money on a replacement. I also feel embarassed to have posted on here unnecessarily! There is a wealth of knowledge on here and nice people who are willing to share their time and knowledge with others. Thank you.
