I know this is daft but I have three plants growing in the garden and I'm not sure what they are. I planted pumpkin seeds and courgette seeds but I'm not sure which are which.
On two of the plants I've got 4 squash looking things that are green my question is are pumpkins green when growing and turn orange once ripe or are they orange from the start.
I would be grateful if someone who is growing pumpkins could post a pic so I know if thats what I've got.
I'll also get DD to take some photos of ours and I'll post them tomorrow.

Yes, some pumpkins are green before they turn orange.
The difference tens to be that pumpkins will trail and courgettes are more closer together....so if you have fruits growing a few inches from each other and lots of leaves in between that make it tricky to get at the courgettes, then they are courgettes. If you have a plant that is making a bid for freedom and running across the garden, then you have a pumpkin.0 -
Hmmm, I do think it must be a pumpkin then.0

:whistle:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
hahaha, now I expected better of you Mrbadexample because I've seen lots of your photos and got quite excited then that the mystery was going to be solved.
Very good though!!0 -
I have both plants growing, they are both very similar in the early stages.
As they get bigger, my pumpkins have a silver colour to the leaves, the fruits are round, they are green at the moment, think they are green until they start to get big and ripe.
The courgettes have leaves that are a bit smaller, greener, and the fruits are long, (courgette shaped!)0 -

Sorry 'bout that.
Sadly, I was unable to help, because this is the biggest pumpkin I've ever grown:
It's also going to be the last one....:pIf you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

Now I'm glad you posted that picture because that is the shape of what I thought was a courgette plant, which is what is confusing me.Apparently the other two are pumpkins because when I asked DD if she would take a pic she asked why when I told her she said
"Oh they are definately pumpkins I've seen them growing in Ellie's polytunnel!!"0 -
Here you go

It's only a bargain if you were going to buy it anyway!0 -

Thanks Jaxx46.
I have got a few other courgette plants elsewhere in the garden and they look exactly the same as yours but I'm still unsure about the three I mentioned above.
What I think are pumpkins are a similar shape and size to the one in your pic.
I think the best bet will be to take a pic and post it I'll do it over the weekend.
The reason I'm not sure is because I saved some seeds out of the pumpkins from halloween just to see if they would grow and at the beginning of the year I planted them all in paper cups 'with' labels along with some courgette seeds from last year. Now nothing seemed to happen so once I decided they weren't going to grow I started to tip them out into the compost bin when I suddenly discovered some shoots but which are they who knows.
Now to add to the complication whilst telling my Dad this tale he says well where is the squash plant I gave you?No idea because I can't remember him giving it to me.
So thats the background to me not knowing whats growing!!0
