New ebayer and cheque payment
will456
A new ebayer with zero feedback won 3 of my paypal only auctions and then requested to pay by cheque.
Ive recieved the cheque ( for just under £40 ) but am a little suspicous.
The name on the cheque doesnt match the name of the ebay user.
I obviously will not post the items until the cheque has cleared but my gut feeling says i may encounter problems at a later date with the cheque payment.
Any advice on what i should do? thanks

To be honest I wouldnt have accepted the cheque - would have told them paypal or nothing if thats what I had stated in the auction.
Have you tried putting a search in for the address that he has given you and look on https://www.b4usearch.com to check he is the one that lives there.
Send it recorded delivery then he is less likely to claim and also if you can take pictures of the items before they leave you with time and date stamp on - this just means you have covered you for more.
As you have already accepted teh cheque, let it clear then send the items - it may be that you have just got an inexperienced ebayer and everyone is new at some timeWeight Loss - 102lb0 -
It could be that your buyer is young and the cheque is from a parent/relative/friend?
As Helen said, bank it and see if it clears. Dont send anything out until you are sure the money is there! And remember some banks show the funds in the account when they are not actually cleared. Probaby best to telephone them and double check before you post

There was no matches found on b4usearch.
Also 5 minutes after they win my 3 auctions they email me saying can they pay by cheque as their paypal account is broken .
I will wait for the cheque to clear but i have to post by standard parcels because of the weight.
The buyer is possibly young due to the nature of the auctions but in a email from them they said they could do a bank transfer if i wanted the money sooner, which i why im suspicous of the name on the cheque and registered ebay member not matching.
Also they didnt send a payment name and address with the cheque so i asked them to email it to me ( i knew it already ) and the email reply didnt have any name just an address which i find strange .
Maybe im paranoid . i Just dont want to be scammed0 -
If you have Paypal only auctions why not set them up as Immediate Payment via Paypal to avoid issues like this? Definately gets rid of people who might want to try it on and as so many use Paypal it doesnt limit your market much at all.0

I thought i had set the auctions up as paypal only so not sure how they were able to bid .
I guess an unconfirmed paypal address would be an even more likely chance to be scammed tho0 -
Often if they say their paypal account is broken it would ring bells. I would wait a week (at least) for the cheque to clear - even maybe contact the bank to check it out and see if they can offer any adviceWeight Loss - 102lb0

Don't worry about it, I get cheques every week and on many occasions the name does not match the ebay user. On the occasions when I queried it regarding the name they often say its the partners, not married etc.
Out of over 300 cheques i've had over 18 months only 1 bounced and even that got worked out with the buyer.0 -

Do you not want business?
As long as the check clears who cares!....money is money after all!0 -
My only real concern is sending the goods once the cheque has cleared then sometime down the line the cheque bouncing.
I have no knowledge of how a cheque payment can be defaulted once cleared but a brief look at past threads suggests its a possibility
I would hate to be scammed when im suspicous but still get scammed lol, i would much prefer being scammed and never see it coming if that makes sense.
2 of the 3 2nd place bidders would happily take a 2nd chance offer, should i consider this option, im not bothered about getting a neg from the winning bidderas i would much rather the cash safely in my pocket0 -

It would be VERY RARE for a cheque to bounce after 5 working days has passed, I mean it would take very extreme circumstances for it to bouce later down the line.
I find a lot of 0 feedback can only pay by cheque because they have not yet set up an Paypal account. I say you should take your money and run, cheques are MUCH safer than PAYPAL.0
