Need reliable small car? Any recommendations?

Our old banger has finally bitten the dust and I am in the market for a small car to run around town. Must be small as we have no parking at all near us - we park on road and park it where we can squeeze into a space. I need 4 doors and a hatch + large boot (we carry a lot of sports kit). Performance and looks are less important than reliability and ease of maintenance. Rear seating is less important than boot space although it does need to take passengers occasionally.

I have around £8000 to spend and that would buy a new car but all the ones I have seen have a sloped aerodynamic back roof and shaped hatch and sacrifice boot space for style. I really want something squarer which is easy to lift stuff in and out as I am not very tall. So reliable second hand would be fine. (I have a friend in the car trade who will check it out for me).

Any recommendations?

If you need a short car with plenty of luggage space consider a Citroen Berlingo, Skoda Roomster etc.

agree with above berlingo or roomster type vehicles would suite your needs best.

as reliability is one of your main concerns i would be looking at the roomster and probably a tdi,not sure how much these things cost though so may be out of you budget??
one thing to remember the roomster will also hold resale value better than the berlingo or any french stuff for that matter.

Dont buy a brand new one though, get a second user one, a couple or 3 months old and you will save thousands.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
