How to copy from PC/CD to cassette tape?

Yeah Yeah I know its old hat......we are about to replace our old car but meanwhile the OH has a long road trip this weekend and wants to some music on the way and it only has a cassette player.

I have lots of legally paid for MP3s on my PC and as it happens a fairly new Sanyo cassette tape player-recorder.

So I connected one end of a stereo "male" cable to the mic socket on the PC and the other to the mic socket on the cassette recorder. So far so good. I adjusted the sound to midway on both and successfully copied a couple of my MP3 tracks from my PC onto a cassette tape. Not brilliant sound but the OH is not a hi fi fanatic anyway. It would do. That was yesterday.

Today I set out to finish the job and now all I can get is white noise. Same tape, same PC. I tried copying the same tracks as yesterday, adjusted the sound again but still just white noise. Is there something I might have done on the PC between then and now which is why it doesn't work? (Incidentally I am using RealPlayer . VLC doesn't seem to like my MP3s.)

Anyone got any suggestions?

The 'mic' socket on the PC:) ? The microphone socket is for, uhm, inputs, surely. Is there not a different socket ('audio' or 'headphones').

Yes should I put it into the headphones socket?

<pauses to bang head on table> Yes?

Walk away from the forum, do something else for half an hour, and when you suddenly realise what you have just asked rush back and delete the thread to avoid future embarrassment!

Why not buy one of these and connect your MP3 player directly?

Duh- Sorry I am not usually this thick but am currently recovering from quite a severe illness and my brain is not functioning correctly - I keep forgetting things half way through. I put it down to post viral fatigue. I had it plugged in correctly yesterday of course.

Re the MP3 connection kit - I have one I use myself in the car but am not willing to trust the OH with my MP3 player as he is notoriously absent minded.
