Can anyone recommend a good rss reader (free)? I'm still undecided on whether it should be a plugin or standalone program. Or maybe if people use a good widget rss reader, I'm open to all ideas.

Firefox
I LOVE firefox as an RSS reader. I open it up and the links read
"Digg - the register - bbc newws - times news - times law news - times sport news"
Just click on it to see alllll the latest headlines etc.
With an external program you have to go out of your way to view the headlines. Integrated into the browser is very handy as its quick and easy
To add an RSS feed to firefox click on the orange square at the right hand side of the address bar (for example on digg.com) and once added it will appear next to the firefox "Latest Headlines" link with a drop down menu of all the latest news

I love the Google Reader 'rivers of new approach' (all your feed combined into a single list to read). But Google reader does lack a lot of features.
I also think Firefox and Sage are a great combination. You won't find anything as convenient as having your reader built into a browser for quickly being able to switch between the summary and the full story.
Finally, GreatNews is also a good reader.
