Skimming Prep

For all the plasterers out there!

i am going to have my 3 bed semi skimmed in October.

can the skim be directly applied onto wallpaper?

(i have taken off the majority of the wallpaper off the walls and ceilings. however in one room theres some really old paper - which feels like its 'plastic coated', anyway im having a reallly rough time doing away with it). now a neighbour was saying if its that stubborn plaster can be applied on top with some pva bonding! IS THIS TRUE?

In another room theres paint on the ceiling. With the help of pva bonding can skim be simply be applied directly on top of this paint?

im sure you can appreciate removing anything from the celings is a painful neck twisting job! id be grateful if anyone could help!

i'm no expert but thought I'd just let you know that we have a plasterer in this week and believe you cannot plaster over paper as it will simply pull away from the wall in time. We had to remove all tiles and wallpaper from the kitchen walls.

I've been applying PVA bonding to bare cement/brick parts of the walls.

With reference the ceiling, I believe yes you can apply the PVA bonding to part painted areas and then skim over.

Not sure if this has helped

I agree and whilst I'm happy to do most diy and prep work, I didn't want to attempt removing wallpaper from our ceilings so we got a decorator in for that job.

Have you tried a steamer to get rid of that stubborn paper?
  • If your plaster skims over the paper he is a cowboy!

I'd remove the paper, the paint is ok.

Clean the walls as much as possible and leave the PVA to the plasterer, then if it cracks or falls off he can't blame you.
  • Thank you all!

    Just as i thought!

this was my argument with my neigbour but as he is 20 years my senior i thought had had more 'life' experiences and thats why i didnt counter
