You just need to say why you want to do it, why that course/institution, what you can bring to the institution and show some sort of interest or enthusiasm in it. You also need to be able to show that you can write coherently in proper English. There are also plenty of samples online, so you can get the gist of how to structure it.

I wrote bullet points of everything I wanted to say - why I wanted to study the subject, why I was applying to those universities and why I thought I'd be capable. Then wrote the points into prose.

    It's 400 characters, including spaces.

Don't worry about it too much or you will make it worse.

They want to know you are keen, have the right qualities and have some idea where you are going in the future.

    What subject is it?

You can also contact the careers dept at the college and ask them to look at your personal statement.

try student rooms - I was the same as I didn't know anything about personal statements (left school 25 years ago and never had to do a personal statement)
you can go to the personal statement forum and post up what you have so far and specially chosen members review for you and offer suggestions... I found it really helpful.
they wont write it for you but just help guide you.

just keep it simple too - they just want to know why you want to study the course etc.

    good luck
