    Btw, found this site cheapcall1689.co.uk/cheapcall

Their prices are irresistibly cheap (0.8p/min to USA, China, Thailand etc. etc.)
Always worth checking the MSE International CallChecker though (e.g. 18185 and a number of others beat that price for calls to USA).

Hi, when we use 0800 number the rate per minute is usually higher right? I checked their webiste but there is no mentioning of this? Is it really no surcharge on top of the pence per minute advertised?
Yes (for example, using 18185.co.uk, a call to a UK 01 or 02 number will cost 5p + 0p/minute if you can use the 18185 prefix but 5p + 1p/minute if you use the 0808 1703703 gateway number).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

There is no charge to call the 0808 freephone number from a landline. Its a free call. Their is a 5p connection charge plus the appropriate call rate that you pay 18866.

"Due to great demand you can now also benefit from cheap 18866-rates via our dedicated freephone number 0808 1 701 701*! Mobile users can also use our local rate access number 020 81 803 803*. A 5p connection fee applies to all calls. "

We've been using 18866 almost since we moved to the U.K. from Canada ten years ago. It's saved us a packet, I can tell you. Last year we switched our phone (including line rental) to Sky and had to switch to the 0808 number to make calls as they had blocked the normal 18866 prefix.

All was well for a while, but now I'm finding that sometimes long distance calls go through and sometimes they don't. Lately the phone just rings out. Doesn't go to voice mail or anything else, it rings out then I get a recording that says the number isn't answering, try again. The person I'm trying to call has attempted to ring me and gets a recording saying "number cannot be completed as dialed".

Weird. 18866 doesn't seem to know any reason why this is happening. Sky however is happy to inform me that for an additional £5 a month, I can have unlimited long distance calls to Canada. I hate to sound paranoid, but you can't help but wonder if 18866 users are slowly being cut off so you've no choice but to sign back on with the major suppliers.

I have Skype on the pc which is great, but sometimes you need to use the phone.

Try using sister company 18185 http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php and its cheaper.
