Can't get an MOT because VIN doesnt match V5

Hiya,

I after some advice please:

My Toyota Yaris was bought from the main dealer new 3 years ago. As it's now 3 years old, I need to get an MOT before I can buy the road tax.

(Now, I'll confess, I forgot this fact until I tried to renew my tax online last Thursday and it wouldnt go through).

So, I booked it in today, with the intention of getting the MOT done and then heading down to the PO for the tax. Problem solved.

Unfortunately, the guys at Kwikfit couldnt do the MOT because the car reg didnt appear on their computer and then the VIN on the V5 didnt match my car. Apparently, I have a ringer!

BUT, the car was purchased new (i'm the first and only registered keeper) from the main dealer.

I'm off there in the morning to sort it out, but who's responsible.
Surely buying a car new from a dealer should guarantee I dont have these problems? I'm now in the poo slightly, as I need to use my car to get to the airport on Wednesday PM, but still have to work Tuesday and Wednesday, so need to get a quick resolution ASAP. I just want my MOT and my tax sorted.

Do I have any cause to complain/get comp (e.g. a load car) from the main dealer? Potentially, I've been driving a car illegally for the last 3 years (which could look bad on my application to join the police). Will I be able to sort this quickly?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

More likely a co*k-up than a ringer exactly, not that it helps you at the moment. If you have a problem with the main dealer I think Toyota UK or whatever they are called would bend over backwards to sort it out given the bad press they've had of late, just mention the words 'Daily Mail' - or a reputable newspaper.

This is Kwik Fit, did they manage to read your number plate correctly?;)

Have you checked that your number plates match the number on the V5, the wrong plates have been fitted on occasions.

just because it was purchased brand new from a dealer does not mean there will be no problems, the info on V5 is only as accurate as the person who entered details on paperwork at dealer and again on computer at DVLA.

Have you checked yourself that the reg no on V5 is the same as your car and had a look at vin number on V5 compared to car? i had an x3 once that had similar thing picked up on MOT 1 digit was wrong garage still done MOT they just input the details manually on to computer system to perform the test.I then had to return V5 to DVLA with a covering letter explaining the problem and giving correct vin got replacement V5 in a couple of weeks no problem.

Check the VIN plate against the number at the door pillar, plus the number below the tax disk area.

If these all match, then ring up the DVLA for advice. They might need a letter from the dealer, and proof of purchase.

I would have thought it could well have been the guy who was attaching the number plates to a number of new cars has c*cked up.

The dealer should sort it out for you.

It's actually a result on your part, you avoided a Kwic Karp mot, well done:T:T The other bit's minor ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

  • Toyota have been quite good really.

It seems there were too very similar reg'd cars registered at the same time and the details have got a bit mixed. They need to get my V5 and the other cars, send them off to the DVLA and get it all sorted. As I can't legally drive my car at the moment (and I'm off to the airport tomorrow), they've lent me a car to use and when they've sorted out all the paperwork, will return my car. Hopefully this will all be sorted by the time I return and I wont have to worry about it.

So hats off to toyota (so far). And also to Kwikfit, because despite all the dis's they were also really helpful.

Hope you said it needs an MOT and tax so you can drive it after?

They might offer you pay the tax they will MOT it for free, If you are cheeky and push a bit.

Have a giggle and list loads of things you want as compensation.
