Used my Debit Card Online, Enterd My Secure Password Incrrectly. Payment Taken?!?!

Hi guys,

I purchased some clothing from TopMan on 31st July and proceeded through the online payment section, I entered my card details then got to the secure password stage. I entered my password incorrectly then a message appeared on my screen saying the transaction has been cancelled, because I have entered my password wrong. So I check my TopMan account and sure enough there are no outstanding orders. I checked my bank This morning and a transaction for £37.50 has been taken from my account on that day. This was the only time I used my card that Day so the payment must have been for my online shopping. I Rang my bank and they said yes the money has gone from your account, you need to speak to whoever took the money. So I spoke to TopMan and they said:
Once you enter you card details and click continue the money is deposited from your account, if you enter your secure password incorrectly then the money is transferred back to your account within 5 days.
I have never heard of this before, so can someone help me out! Is this true what TopMan are saying? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks!

If it's what they say, go with it. If they money isn't returned after five working days, ask your Bank to dispute the transaction and follow the chargeback process - and also call TopMan again requesting they refund the money post haste as they'd gone past the 5 day timeframe.

Does seem a weird way to operate their checkout process, but if that's how they say they do it, that's how they do it.

  • They said thats what the banks does automatically not them? They said the bank debit the funds then if the transaction hasnt been completed then the funds get returned? I have never had this happen to me so am unsure?

Can I go into my local branch tomorrow and get them to do a chargeback? Whats does this entail?

No it's not the bank that did it, it's top man of course.

And no you can't just walk in and get a chargeback done. You need to exhaust everything with the retailer. If they say it takes five days, wait five days :o

Has the transaction actually appeared on your statement with the retailer name and such, or is it just a pending authorisation at the moment?

    EDIT: Just re-read your posts.

So to confirm - the amount has been debited from your available balance, but hasn't actually shown up on your statement as a transaction? This is what's known as a "Pending Authorisation" and isn't a proper transaction yet. The retailer has some time to claim the funds but if not, they will be released back into your available balance without ever becoming a transaction after a few days, as top man say.

Sometimes happens overnight, sometimes over a week. As it's not become a proper transaction yet, there's nothing either party can do you just need to wait the few days for the funds to be released.

  • On my Online Banking Acount, It shows the date and payment amount but no name as to who the payment went to. The amount has been debbited from my balance as well. Is there any way to tell if its a Pending Authorisation Transaction? Will my bank be able to tell me, can I check myself?

    Thanks for your help
  • I have just read about Authorization holds on Wikipedia and it looks like this is what has happened? Is there any way to confirm this? Many thanks!

Yeah call the bank, they can tell you if it is a full transaction or just a pending authorisation.

Who do you bank with? Natwest / RBS show pending auths in a different colour without the retailer name.

It's just a pending authorisation, not a transaction at the moment.

As you entered your SecureCode incorrectly, the funds will be released in a few days. Call Natwest for an exact timeframe.

Nothing to worry about, all perfectly normal. Just give it a coupla days and it'll drop off ;)
