A possible credit application hinderence

Not sure if this thread is in the right place or not so apologies in advance if its not....

Last week I applied for a credit card and today recieved a letter saying I had provisionally been accepted for it... this was pending identification checks.

Now I was shocked as hell with this one..... From the list of documents I could send it as proof, I thought I would have no problems proving I am who I say I am - I have a current account, building society account, utility bills, insurance, council tax documents, a provisional photocard driving license, passport etc etc etc.....

It was only when I read the letter properly that I realised that all identification sent had to be current i.e last 3 months and have my forename printed in full along with my address.

When going through my documentation to send I realised that the only and single document I had which met this criteria was a benefit letter dated end of July! None of my bank statements, building society passbooks, utility bills, rent statements, insurance documentation or even council tax documents had my forename printed in full!

So not only does this leave me open to more chance of identity confusion but it is now hindering me with credit applications. I have since contacted my current account provider to see if I can have my statements amended with my full forename and also aim to contact all the other relevant companies .

Have a dig through your documents.... it really is quite shocking to see how few companies write your name in full. Just as well I am the only J Bloggs that lives at this address! It is something else to now have to check/amend.

You make an interesting point. If my wife has to prove identity with bills etc it can be difficult because most of our household bills and credit cards are in my name.

However, for any organisation that has a high street presence it is usually not a problem because you can take in your passport and/or driving license as additional evidence.

HMRC documents are very useful. I asked them for a notification of tax code. This did the trick in opening a mini-cash ISA with the Halifax. Numerous documents and statements are only online. My current mortgage lender would not consider online documents from my previous lender. My current lender also offers a paper free documentation option.

  • What I also found strange was that passport was not included on the list of documentation...........

I am just concerned that if more and more companies are requesting your forename in full that people are going to have problems initially.
  • You could get the documents officially certified by your bank - they can confirm your full name and date of birth etc. Then send the officially certified copies to whichever organisations require them.

I've found it increasingly difficult to prove my ID - especially as I've just moved house and won't be on the electoral roll until december!

I'd give them a call, I'm sure they'll accept your passport, but they don't put it on the letter as its quite a valuable document. If you do send it-make sure that you do so recorded delivery, but its got to be worth calling to check as it could save you so much time.
