claim for bathroom tiles

Has anyone had a successful claim for bathroom tiles? We have recently had a water leak and as a result have had to damage several tiles in the bathroom to find it. Despite the insurance company confirming verbally that they would pay for the retiling of the bathroom if we were unable to find matching tiles, they are now refusing to pay for more than the 15 tiles that were damaged. The bathroom is tiled floor to ceiling and would look ridiculous with 15 non matching tiles dotted around.

Nearly all Insurance Companies have what they call the 'pairs and sets' clause on a policy.

This means that if you have a three piece suite and one chair gets damaged, only the chair gets replaced, even if it doesnt match the others.

    This, unbelievably, includes earrings!

So, depending on the terms of your policy, I would assume that they only need to replace the damaged tiles and not re-tile the whole bathroom - using the 'pairs and sets' clause.

I would say you have two options:

    1. Hope that they can match the damaged tiles with the tiles you already have.

    2. Ask whether you can pay an additional amount (under the betterment section) and have the bathroom retiled. So they would pay for the damaged section and you would pay for the rest.

In all honesty, I would see independently how much it would cost to replace the tiles yourself and get them fitted. Dont forget you will have a policy excess to pay and you will lose a percentage of your no claims discount. The loss of your discount and the building back up of it over the next few years may make it more cost efficient not to claim.

If you speak to a claims advisor they will be able to advise you which is the most cost efficient course to take.

    Hope that helps.
