How Can I Transfer Share Certificates to my Name

I am a complete novice in the world of stocks and shares! An elderly relative has given me a gift of £2000 of shares which are still in his name. I want to change the shares into my own name. Can anyone tell me how I go about doing this. Is it done through a solicitor or a share dealing company or possibly the Company who the shares were bought from, eg BT? And how much is this likely to cost?
Any advice would be helpful.

You might be better transferring them into a nominee account (CREST) as they are safer and usually cheaper to deal in, Comdirect have an offer where if you put in more than £500 worth they will credit you with £50.if recommended by someone already with them.
You may have to sell them and purchase back in your name or you may be able to transfer through Computer Share Services, not sure what that would cost, but buying and selling shoudn`t cost more than about £25.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
May I suggest you contact the company Registrar as stated on the share certificate. They are responsible for maintaining the register of shareholders and issuing share certificates. I think you may be able to transfer through them for free by completing a transfer form as no money has been paid for the shares.
Worth a try before the selling and buying route which will cost you
. Regards

When you say they have "given " them to you until they are transferred you don't officially own them as you are still not the registered shareholder.Your relative still is.
You need to get them to fill the relevant transfer form - if they prefer you could complete the simple form - then get then to sign it. You then send this in with the share certficate of ownership. Then they issue you with a new shareholder certificate in your name and you are the offcial shareholder. all relevant info - diviidends etc then get sent to your address. For lower amounts of shares there shouldn't be a fee but you need to check with the relevant company. You don't need anyone else involved provided they are being "gifted" not sold to you.0 -
You need to contact the registrar and ask for a gift transfer form. The registered owner would have to complete this and send it back (along with the share cert if applicable) and the shares will be transferred into your name. There won't be any fee for this as long as the share cert hasn't been lost.
Don't bother transferring them into nominee name unless you deal a lot and know what you're doing, as this type of service only benefits people who trade frequently.0 -
Thanks for all the advice. I have the Share Certificates and a contact telephone number for the Registrar. I will try phoning to get the relevant forms to complete and hopefully it will be straight forward. I'll be back for more help if I get stuck!0
