Please advise - Gas & Electricity Amateur

Hi All,

Don't post on this board very often, but I have just moved into a new flat with my partner and would like some clarification about our gas & electricity setup. It seems our supply (for both gas & elec) is controlled by Southern Electric. I spoke to them today and gave them both meter readings. The lady said that the cheapest way to pay was by direct debit. She then proceeded to explain how I would pay a set amount for each utility every month and come the end of the year I would either owe them (if we had used far more) or they would owe us (if we had used far less). She then advised that I should pay £20 electric per month (via direct debit) and £25 a month for gas (via direct debit).

We (partner and I) only have a 1 and a half bedroom flat and this description was all she based her estimates on - do these prices sound right to you guys?

I have no idea because I'm quite naive and never had to cope with bills before, so any opinions or advice gratefully received :o

Yes they sound alright - perhaps a little on the low side.

Depends on a whole load of factors - size of flat - insulation - how long you spend each day in the flat - how warm you like rooms etc.

I would just accept those DDs but put £20 a month aside(into a bank) in case it is more.

We're both out during the day (professional couple), but we'll probably have at least one shower each a day. Our cooker is gas and we'll only use that once a day for our evening meal. Insulation isn't great, but then we're the types who'd rather put another layer on before turning the heating on :o
  • I think it sounds alot, I have a three bed house and am out all day like you, although when I'm at hmoe I have the heating on fairly constantly in winter, I've gas hob/heating and electric oven and its just me in the house having 1/2 showers a day with maybe three baths a week, I pay £30 DD between the two and it works out pretty much right.
