Getting Married in Italy

I am planning to get married in Italy with my new fiance :-) but have no clue where to start!

Have done some internet searches but there are so many sites and I was just wondering if anybody could help or advise on some sites to get started?

Thanks

We got married in Italy in 2009...:D Really was perfect, very small and intimate...

A couple of links I used were:

    http://www.weddings-abroad-guide.com/wedding-destination-abroad.html

    and the

    http://www.weddingchaos.co.uk/wedding-forum/

In Italy you do have to get married in a town hall you can't get married outside unless you get married at a registry office in the UK and then have a blessing in Italy...

I would recommend getting a wedding planner as the paperwork can be awkward...i wouldn't recommend ours as she was lovely up until the day of the wedding when she kinda lsot the plot a bit...

Research your wedding planner carefully. We thought ours was good until as I said the wedding day and the days leading up to it, she really took the biscuit...

    Whereabouts are you thinking of?

    Thanks for this!

We have been looking at Sorrento, Lake Como, there are some beautiful places on some websites that I have been looking at, we are looking to hire a villa out for a week for the wedding party but then want to get married in a nearby location - just so it is something different and we can travel there to make it a little more special!

I always find the best information you can get is from people who have experinced it themselves, nothing better than a bit of inside knowledge :-)

I can suggest for about some good places. I hope it will help you to decide a good one.

    Florence, medieval red wedding hall
    Amalfi Coast
    Rome, Vatican
    Italian Riviera

Only problem is with Florence is that they treat foreigners differently and you only have limited times to get married all before about 10:30 in the morning...The rest is for the locals. That's why we ended up getting married in Siena...Shame as Florence was our number 1 choice, though having got married in Siena I think that would have been my number 1 choice....

We got married in Positano on the Amalfi Coast in April this year. As DH had been married before we weren't able to marry in a church, but we were able to have a civil ceremony in the town hall. It has a beautiful balcony overlooking the sea which is where we were married. The ceremony was really simple and our day was perfect, so would recommend it to anyone!

When we decided that was where we wanted to get married I researched on the internet and compiled a list of companies/planners and contacted each of them with a list of what we were looking for. I got a few replies, but only one of them actually answered each question personally, so she is the one we went with.

She specialised in Sorrento weddings, but organised everything for us in Positano. For £1400 she booked the ceremony at the town hall, sorted the paperwork, supplied an interpreter (essential as the ceremony is carried out in Italian), flowers and musicians. If we had marred in Sorrento the same price would have also included a horse drawn carriage.

If you would like any more information, or her details PM me and I will help in any way I can. :)

Ahh Positano..I love that place. Had a few holidays there when younger and in Amalfi as well.... :D

Fond memories and the beauty is unsurpassable.

The only thing i would say is you do have to consider guests as well in particular close family. Think airport transfer times and such like especially for guests flying in a for a couple of days.

We were joined by my sister and her husband plus my daughter and her fiance. They hired cars and luckily they were able to find parking for them as it was early in the season. Would imagine parking to be a nightmare during peak times, so would agree that you need to look into tranfers. Having said that, the local buses were great value for money - if a little scarey!!!

We hired an apartment in Praiano where we all stayed for a week - worked out much cheaper than a hotel and meant we could have some quality family time too.

    How exciting!!

    I can definitely recommend Sicily.

Hubby and I got married in Ragusa, Sicily at end of May this year. We hired a gorgeous villa for a week before the wedding, had all our family and friends come to stay for as long as they wanted and then had the wedding in the beautiful town hall in Scicli, with the reception back at the villa. When everyone had finished eating, drinking and dancing they just rolled into bed - no need for taxis etc - perfect!

I can highly recommend Louise at the Sicilian Villa Company (sorry, can't post website link as I'm a newbie ;-) ). She manages properties incl loads of villas in Sicily, and also planned our wedding. The villa we hired was called Villa Zinna (although I think it may since have been renamed to Villa Elena).

All our guests LOVED the setting and the food. You can't go wrong!

    Good luck!

Yes we hired a villa as well. The one we rented we had OH's family in one of the villas and my family in the other. You can often find that some villas are together which mean that you can put close family together but not living in each others pockets...

We had our meal back at the villa as well and it was lovely and we watched the sun go down and the fireflies in the garden, really beautiful....:D

I wouldn't recommend going early June/May or September though as the weather isn't as good as it was 10 odd years ago then....
  • Thank you for your comments.

After looking into details further we have finally decided to get married in Lake Como, Italy and are researching potential venues and wedding planners, so would like to know if anybody can advise on the following:

The two venues we are looking at are Villa Cipressi, Varenna and Hotel Serbellino, Bellagiao and I was wondering if anybody has been or had their weddings at either of these venues?

Also, the wedding planners that we are looking at are Sally from The Lake Como Wedding Planner, Alessandra from Italian Lake Weddings and again I am wondering if anybody has used these before?

We are visiting Lake Como in October to meet with planners and view potential venues, we are looking at staying in Bellagio but have been told their are no villas for large parties here, so I am wondering if you have had a wedding in Lake Como which area you and your wedding party stayed at.

Any information would be greatly useful as I am searching the web and there is just so much information.

    Thanks

    Vickie
