Changing to quarterly billng

Hi All
I am with atlantic gas and electric, for my electric.
Having received a huge bill for £1166 they have now hiked up my monthly DD to £196.
Four times my previous one.
i share with a flat mate and now thinking about moving to quarterly billing so that I cover the real costs. Is there anything to be aware of. basically i'd rather pay that then get him to cover half of it, so i have no surprises should he leave or whatever.. i am hoping to pay off the £1k debt over the next months.
Thanks

Generally with quarterly billing the unit costs are higher (or the discounts are lower) than with DD. Is the bill correct and based on actual readings or is it estimated ? If correct how long has the debt build up taken ?0

If you abandon the debit you will lose the one-twelfth of your annual bill discount (in addition to any change in unit prices).
Since you can pay off £800 over the next two months you would be better to keep the upped direct debits of £196 for a month or three and pay any additional one-offs you can (was that £800 to be in addition to your regular debtis?) After three months phone again to see if you can negotiate it back down (but you will have to make those additional large payments - they will not listen to promises of revising your behaviour this year.)
What difference does it make if he leaves - surely you are reading your meter every month and taking appropriate payments from everyone each month - oh, you aren't? Well, do so.0 -
hello, no the £800 was to get the balance owed down, in hope that they'd reduce my monthly DD.. after these next two months I simply won't have the funds to pay £196 each month.
Thanks for the replies.0 -
Come to an arrangement with Atlantic.
Paid £400 today, then paying £400 next month, £200 following and then final £166 to clear my blance.
Then in meanwhile I am going to keep a check on my meter readings, so I can see what is being used, main reason I dont is because I am in a block of flats so cant get to it myself.. lesson learned and all that, so now will just nag the management company each month.
The lowest they'll reduce my DD after the debt is cleared is £98. I'd rather get rid the old debt and start fresh so it suites me. Hopefully now i've learned my lesson i'll be due a rebate at the end the year hah.. here's hoping.0 -
Had another reading today and used 382 units since 29th June 10 units a day used. Is this about avge for a two bed flat?
compared to winter I am using way less, and atlantic are going to collect more than double what i estimate I'll be using. If I carried on this way I would be due a rebate I guess, as hopefully this winter i'll be wise to things and not use my electric heaters as much.
I am on domestic standard no standing charge online.
How do they work out discounted and standard energy units?0
