Barclays:The right hand does not know what the left hand is doing!

I've been with Barclays for about 14 years now. When I got my first job, I was given an overdraft of £2000, eventhough my salary was not even half the amount.
Few days ago, I had a large cheque coming out of my account and as I did not know when exactly it was going to be cashed, I kept the money in the e-savings account to earn a bit more than 0.1%. At the same time I've decided to increase my overdraft to £2500 to avoid any unauthorised overdraft charges.
My PC had a couple of problems at the time so instead of doing the deed online I gave them a call.
The call centre employee ask me a series of questions about my income, outgoings etc. (which I thought was a bit odd), then she went away for a few minutes to talk to a manager and when she returned she told me bacause my expenditure (including money going to savings accounts) matched my income and because they are a responsible lender, they would not authorise the overdraft increase. Having the e-savings and the Regular saver did not make any difference. She also told me that if I want to discuss it further I should go to a branch.
I just could not believe my ears!
I eventually got my PC up and running, connected to on-line banking and had a look at my pre-approved offers, it turns out the responsible lender had me pre-approved for a £25000 barclayloan and a £3625 overdraft both available at a click of a button. Rang Barclays again to ask for an explanation and this time they told me they did not understand why I was turned down half an hour or so earlier, they appologised and ask me if I wanted to log a complaint.
It makes you wonder...
