Mouse scroll problem

I have a Trust wireless mouse. Normally when I'm on a web page with scroll bars it allows me to use the wheel to scroll up and down that page by simply moving the mouse pointer close to the scroll bar. It seems to have stopped doing that.

Now when I want to scroll up and down a web page I have to physically go to the scroll bar and move the page up or down using that.

The facility to press down on the wheel still works, ie I press down on the wheel and the circle with two arrows (up/down) appears and I can scroll up and down that way. But I can't simply land on a web page and scroll up and down it without having to press down on the mouse wheel like I used to be able to.

Any ideas what's up with it?

Does it start working when you click anywhere in the page (other than a link..)? I have a Trust corded wheely - generally scrolls if the mouse is anywhere in the page/frame (doesn't need to be near the scroll bar), but sometime loses focus on the page (maybe adverts loading, anti-virus/firewall updates etc).

Yes, normally I could be anywhere on the page and it would scroll up/down when I moved the wheel, but now it's stopped doing that. Now it wont scroll unless I go to the scroll bar and drag it or I press the wheel down and the circle with two arrows in it appears and I can then drift back and forth without moving the wheel again.

From the sound of that it's the hardware playing up or just possibly (but not likely) your mouse is not being recognised as a wheel mouse.

The wheel does work when I use it by pressing on it. I've taken it to bits and cleaned it, but that hasn't solved it!

    I've fixed it.

Took it to pieces again and I noted that one of three wires that feeds into the wheel assembly had come adrift. Fiddling with it caused another wire to come adrift. My friend, who is quite agile with a soldering iron, has managed to re-attach the wires and the mouse is functioning properly again now.
