All banks have their own criteria - all because you were turned down at Nationwide, it does not mean they are the most difficult bank, but rather that you did not meet their criteria.

When I talked to someone at their info desk, they personally said it's very hard to get a debit card with them and I'd have more luck trying pretty much any other bank/building society.

Natwest seem to be the easiest, if he's not an existing customer wait until after results day and apply for it then (otherwise he won't get railcard etc).

Just to clarify my original post.

It was the advisor (not cashier) at the Halifax that told him he was now blacklisted at all banks as he had tried twice in two weeks to get a student account with them.

The unintentional red-herring was about the Nationwide. We opened a child savings account for my son when he was young so it was easy to then get a debit card/current account when he was 16.
However, it was the guy from the Halifax who told him that the Nationawide was the hardest institution to get one of these accounts as they have their own points scoring tariff as well as using the credit agencies.

The Halifax advisor advised my son to wait one week then try another bank. He suggested the Natwest as he said that they had a more relaxed criteria.

My point of the post is, how can a young lad who has saved all his life, never been overdrawn, never had a credit card and never had a loan and just about to start his university life be turned down from a student bank account?

    It's a total disgrace.

seeing as he already seems to be in good standing with nationwide, can he not get a student account with them?
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
  • from personal experience, smile (part of co-op) have been fab with me ,set up my student account on line, with no problems, their only request (the same as all other student accounts) is that my student loan or part time wages be put into the account before they would activate my overdraft, whichi believe in first year can be up to £1200, plus everything can be done on line or via phone. have never had to go into the branch once. Quite a few of my friends have used them and thought they were fab too. ive just graduated and am staying with them for my graduate account.

    good luck
Rude people are a fact of life, if you wrestle with a pig you will stink! There's no getting around this concept. If you allow yourself to go someone's level you will only bring yourself down.

well i guess it could be that he has no credit history at all, so it's hard to be able to get a rating for that... it's annoying, but it's not the first time it's happened to someone, nor will it be the last. and Halifax really are more picky than other banks (just search this forum to see how many times this has happened to other people - it isn't personal!).

better to focus on helping him get a good student account than focussing on the irritating ways that banks score people (it isn't transparent or always fair, but in the short term, it isn't going to change).

    Nationwide don't have student accounts.
  • This sounds like what's just happened to me. I applied for a student account with Halifax, and the advisor in-putted the wrong details the first time, so then had to re-submit at a later stage. However, this then meant that I was put in the black due to too many applications in such a short space of time. I appealed to Halifax but they say they cant do anything to help as they're a lot tighter on account openings atm. I then went to Lloyds and was told they can't do anything because apparently my credit score is pants now, which is all down to Halifax, as like your son I've had no problems with the bank in the past.

Typical when you need something from a bank that's when they tell you to sod off...but hey, things should hopefully get better as the economy picks up a wee bit. :)

He wont be blacklisted. Go onto one of the credit report check sites and do a credit check just make sure that there are nothing untoward on his record just in case. I could be wrong but I'm sure a few banks wont give a student over draft unless you've been unseeing them for a minimum amount of time.
  • Notso, is your son currently a student? or is he awaiting his results?
If he is awaiting his results, just wait until he has his uni place confirmed and then he should be able to open one with no problems.
I presume martin will produce a list of best student accounts nearer the time too which will help...
