Who dreams up these excuses? Can i buy a book loaded with them?

If followed by a police car with flashing blue lights can you say you were going faster
    to avoid them overtaking dangerously?

Might be a bit hard on an empty motorway though.

Sorry, where does the OP say that?

If anything it was working fine, considering he knew he was 10-20mph over the limit :rotfl:

    Here:
Prior to entering this 50 zone my dashboard lights had started flickering, sat nav was playing up and my head lights had started to dim. Due to these roadworks there was no hard shoulder, so I entered the 50 zone and continued somewhere between 60 - 70.

So...either the speedo wasn't working which is why he didn't know what speed he was doing, or he was lying about not knowing what speed he was doing.

if your lucky the flickering lights on your car might mean that the camera couldnt pick up your plate number

Yeah...because the flash on the speed camera wouldn't illuminate the back of the vehicle like it was daytime, would it?

    For the love of god....

Well, depending on the car, most speedometer's are cable driven from the gearbox, so an electrical fault wouldn't affect it.

The lights on the dash would stop you seeing the thing though wouldn't they?

It was late at night your lights started to dim and you thought the best course of action was to go faster!!!! HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

They're a new driver, the electrics failed at night whilst moving at speed. A little bit of clouded thinking is to be expected, give them a break.

(And be glad you weren't on that road that night ;) ) Seriously OP, if the camera had film, you've been caught. If it didn't you've learned a decent lesson, just hope the camera was empty eh.

Nope, I think the OP deserves a ticket, perhaps he/she will use a bit of common sense in the future.;)

So you were doing 70, in roadworks, at night, with failing headlights?

I'm not sure I'd want to stand up in front of the CPS and a magistrate and admit to that, chances are they would tack on additional charges for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition or due care and attention or something like that.

In this case I'd just stump up the 60 quid and also get my alternator and battery looked at.
