Audio problems

I've recently reinstalled windows on my PC, but rather than using the supplied Compaq restore disks, I used a 'normal' copy of windows that doesn't install 2 tonnes of crap I don't want.
I've noticed today that the audio sounds like it's coming from underwater and is slighlty faster than it should be.
I run my audio through the onboard soundcard to an external amp and I've checked other sources and the amp is fine.
I also stream my music to an MP101 and the audio there is fine.
I've tried plugging the audio-cable into the amp through the headphone sockets and it still sounds pap.
So, I've eliminated the amp as a problem, corruption of the data and the onboard soundcard (I think), so anyone got any ideas what's next?
I'm guessing that it's probably drivers for the onboard audio (SoundMAX) rather than codecs as I've already had the K-Lite full codec pack installed, but I'm not really sure where to go from here.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

1.go into windows media player
2.click on the view menu
3.then go to enhancements
4.then click show enhancements (then if the menu dissapears, repeat steps 2+3
5. then click play speed setting and ajust the slider to 1.0 or click normal

this may not be correct as i did this with media player 9

and try turning off srs wow effects (same method as above)
