Great 'Free Car Journey Games' Hunt

When I was a child, we used to play "I love my love". First person says e.g. "I love my love with an A, because his name is Aurelius and he lives in Adwick-le-Street and he is Avaricious." Next person with B, etc. etc. We always tried to think up the most random names/words we could.
We also did a lot of singing, the songs that go on a bit like This Old Man and Green Grow the Rushes-o, and my brother and I would sometimes try to make up extra verses. And we played Animal Vegetable Mineral, again getting quite complicated, e.g. "my book" would be "vegetable and mineral with animal connections" (paper and ink and me). With my husband I play "Who am I?" - one thinks of someone, alive or dead, real or fictional, and the other has to try to guess from only yes/no answers.0 -
My answer to this query is if you are taking a long holiday trip and want to keep the kids amused then leave them at home with nan. Am I cynical or what ?????????????????????????0

It's a wee bit Addams Family but a recent trip to Cornwall inspired us to create Roadkill Bingo. I made a board with nine animals on it and we ticked them off as spotted. Due to the prevalence of roadkill, we soon had to allocate points for each animal. The kids & I played it for hours on the drive from Cornwall to Wiltshire....!
I ended up (as an illustrator) turning it into a cartoon which is on implodingnavel.com - look in the Galleries section but be warned: it is, after all, Roadkill Bingo...
Looking at other posts, I realise that this is the complete flip-side to originalkat's altogether nicer game...0 -
After hearing someone say they did this on the radio, I sing "Eddie Stobart" to the tune of the Hallelujah Chorus, whenever I see one. I also do "Norbert Dentresangle" to the tune of the German national anthem, and I'm still trying to find something to fit "Wincanton Distribution"......
(yes I do drive alone quite a lot:o)
Careful if you start this, it becomes Pavlovian and the kids WILL pick it up!
We also sing the rudest rugby songs we can think of, when they have gone to sleep ( we tend to go at night to avoid the worst traffic jams). Helps keep you awake. Actually now they are all teenagers and don't go to sleep, we may just have to sing them all together;)
The kids used to enjoy the Picnic Game (I'm bringing an archery set, a banana, a crab sandwich....gets really hard to remember them all by the time you get to w) and Botticelli (you have 20 questions to work out which famous person the child has chosen to be - and they can only answer "yes" or "no". You will be enlightened to learn many new famous people from your kids, too.....)0 -

This is revolting....I love it!:rotfl:But I think it might make the children sicker than they already generally are in the car....0 -
A good counting game to help with arithmetic - the players take turns to say the numbers in order from one upwards, but every time they get to a number that divides by 3 you have to say Fizz and then when you get to a number that divides by 5 you say Buzz. One that divides by both 3 and 5 is Fizz Buzz. It starts 1,2, fizz,4, buzz, fizz, 7, 8, fizz, buzz, 11, fizz, 13, 14, fizz buzz, 16 etc.
Probably one for older children!!
Did you get this from Cabin Pressure by any chance?0 -

Some days you are the dog, some days you are the tree0 -
Whilst the kids are still young and going on car journeys you should play the 'Spot The Bike' game. You score 10 points for motorbikes, and 5 points for cycles ( in more rural locations you could add horses or tractors for 15 points etc) This is not only a fun game, but hopefully it will make them aware to look out for more than just cars and trucks when having to cross roads, and hopefully later on in life when they too, are starting out driving themselves0
