Why can't they get the part? There must be new ones around that they could piulfer the part from in the meantime.

T'is what we are off to find out!! That is what my hubby said. ;)

And how exactly does the OP enforce if it they dont agree? I dont really think they would win at a small claims court unless the repair dragged on.

Having to cope with a slightly smaller car for 2 or 3 days isnt significant and is forseeable that cars break down occasionally; furthermore as it was a fault of this nature the OP could have planned the repair better.

Just read the OP and then you will see why it would cause problems!!!

As for the part, it looks like they are ordering one of the body computers that are normally coded to a specific car, and as such are not interchangeable (that easily anyway)!!

blue_monkey, I hope you can get this resolved. You clearly have a need for a larger car and, what's the point of insurance (legalities aside) if not to make one's life easier? One thing does strike me though... you own a 7 seater car, I assume because you have a large family or regularly transport a large number of people in the car (you mention a disability buggy - I should imagine they're pretty awkward to move around). It's something that I would have pursued when I was taking out the insurance in the first place. I'd have hoped to have a contractual arrangement (if possible) whereby I was provided with a 7 seater or equally large car - after all it's fairly normal to be offered something quite small as a courtesy car and it could be argued that you might have foreseen this type of problem. Perhaps it's something worth investigating next time you renew or change your insurance. But good luck this time. Keep asking!

Hubby came to the garage with me and they said they did not know whether they would have the part nor when it would get into the UK. Hubby (who is a service engineer and was in uniform) said 'thats what they tell us, can you ask them to post it instead?'. Lots of faffing around 'yes, I guess we could do, or we could call them and ask if another dealer has one'. Hurrah. So it looks like they might try and get it quicker for us after all.

The car we have is big enough to get around with for now so that is the main thing.

It is warranty though, not insurance, so I do not know if there is a contract of sorts.

And yes, it is the onboard computer. He said they took the cover off to have a look and it just went kaput. It was great having hubby there as they did not fob me off with stuff.

The alarm and central locking will be linked in with the cars engine management stuff. Hence why your car wont work without it.

It did work though Steve, even when it was playing up there was never a time when it stopped working.

Actually, that was a lie, I have just remembered that I went over a roundabout s few months back and thought 'car feels heavy' and it would not accelerate and i pulled it into the kerb and then worked out that the engine had turned off. It had not stalled but it was as though I had taken the key out as all the lights on the dash were off. I called the garage the next day and asked if it had happened to any others and they were puzzled and said to call back if it happens again but I've only just remembered that. Maybe it was to do with that.
