RAC online insurance cover nightmare

Having spent about 4 whole days researching car insurance I decided on buying RAC cover through Topcashback (to get £60 cash back). I discovered that members get cover "plus" for free (worth about £40). I bought breakdown cover (and became a member) through the Topcashback site...getting £23 cashback. It all looked absolutely seamless BUT my membership number isn't recognised when I enter it into the online form. No one at the RAC seem to know why and keep telling me to wait 24 hours. I've waited 48 so far (although I suppose Sunday doesn't count). I'm unable to purchase the insurance over the phone as I'll lose the £60 cash back. One option was for the RAC to enter the membership number once I'd filled in the form and then for me to recall the quote but I'm not sure that will work with the cash back. Does anyone know on here? My toddler and I haven't been out for 2 whole long days as my car is uninsured. I suppose one plus is it's taken so long one of the accidents I had has now slipped into being over 5 years ago! Any ideas what I should do next? thanks

I had something similar, I went through the comparison web sites and RAC came out as nearly best so went with them. As I am an existing member of RAC, for 30 years, it offered the option of getting premium cover extras for free , courtesy car etc. but refused to recognise my membership number. I ended up talking to the call centre who managed to enter the membership number after a faff.

One puzzling thing was when I rang the centre the premium was higher than the comparison site, and when the operator checked again it jumped by another £5. How bizarre!
  • I know exactly what you mean. I've been ringing the centre on and off all weekend and every time the price was slightly different. I have just discovered that it has now gone up by about £120...I can't understand it (AND my speeding offence has expired).

I'm exhausted. I don't think I can go through another round of brain tangling quotes and I'm sure my toddler has watched enough dvds

I'm cancelling the breakdown cover tomorrow when the payment clears (which is why the membership doesn't show apparently)!
