Greenhouse question

I have a smallish garden and would like to get a greenhouse (6x6,6x4).
I was thinking of putting it at the back on my garden in the corner where my pond is (which I'll redo - no fish, just insects).

As a complete novice I thought I'd ask for advice on which to get. I haven't a lot of money so don't want top of the range but I also don't want one that will collapse within the year. I'm not keen on glass as I have young children and wondered which is the best alternative.

Thanks in advance.

Have a look at Norfolk Greenhouses the "Ultimate" thats Polycarbonate the other models have a pvc sheet on a roll fixed with tape. Have a read on thier website and you decide what is good for you. I have the Ultimate but i think its Alibobsy has the same size as me but with the sheeting. Maybe she will reply to this I do not think she has had problems with her's.

You would be best at getting Polycarbonate panels if you dont want glass

I would have a look on ebay first as you may found one cheaper for a new one at b&q they are £189 for the 6x4 but I would go for the largest one you can fit in.

PolyCarb if the area is reasonably sheltered is the best bet for you.
If it is fairly open to the wind you'll find it might lose panels (such as on an allotment or in a large open garden).

I ordered a 6x10 greenhouse with safety glass and the glass itself was only an extra £80 (was on clearance).

Everywhere else wanted to more than double that amount for the same glass

I got the norfolk budget greenhouse and it's a bit of a !!!!!! to put up but not as much as people are saying in reviews etc. It is pretty lightweight but you do need to weight it down with flag stones or earth. The front and the back takes about 3/4 hour each piece then you have to join it together and glaze it. However considering the price it is a good buy.

I got one from B&Q earlier this year and rather than weigh it down i've drilled holes in the bottom rail and into the bricks i laid to put it on, then put big screws / bolts to secure it.

Personally, I wouldn't touch a Norrfolk Greenhoiuses anything, after the trouble I had bolting together one of their smaller proucts.

I'm not sure I'd use polycarbonate, either, though if toughened glass isn't affordable, it is a better alternative to 'horticultural glass' which is evil stuff, I agree.

If you can possibly afford a well made aluminium house with toughened glass, it will last longer and seve you better than a cheap makeshift.

    Take a look at the Gardmann polycarb greenhouse with base here;

I had the 8x6 version for 5 years now and its been an excellent buy.

I was one of three active children who ran and cycled around my parents garden, not one of us smashed the greenhouse. Get a second hand one is my advice, or if you are fairly handy build one. you can buy polycarb sheets from diy shops, then it is just a simple wooden frame

Whatever size you think you need, buy a bigger one. Area-wise they are better value. Or, do as I did, and bought a second, bigger one later!

If you buy a wooden greenhouse, you can get them with timber at the bottom, which is much safer, although you do lose light at floor level. They tend to be warmer in winter though, and more attractive.

Trellis around the greenhouse area will also protect it from balls.

Whatever you buy, enjoy it and use it lots.
