can you get broadband with no line rental and minimum contract?

Hey guys,

I'm a student and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about the internet. I am living in private accommodation and although there is broadband provided it's got a "fair use" policy and I download quite alot so I was wondering if there was another "unlimited" download provider I could go with.

Basically, I don't want a phone line (I have a mobile) and want the cheapest broadband (or even dialup would do) as I don't care about the connection speed. I don't really want to have a minimum contract of 12 months, but I don't mind getting a 12 month contract actually so long as it can be moved (ie. not fixed so I could carry it on next year in a house). Does such a thing exist?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated...

Thanks x

  • only people that do internet without phone line is cable companies as all the others use the phone line as a transmision medium
  • Just phoned up BT, lovely sounding geordie accent on the other end, should have got her number :D

    BT line rental is £11 a month if you sign a direct debit, £12 if ya never (her words)
    The minimum contract is 1 month according to her but I am guessing that means the line is already in.

    after that, you can read http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1053251952,43275,
    if you only need dial up. The article does mention fast4.net for instance which you can use unlimited for £4.99 a month with no minimum term.
    I am not sure how good the service is though so you might want to do some research on it, but with no minimum length it might be worth a look.

    Total = £15.99 a month.
    Includes 24/7 dial up internet via a free phone number.
    Includes evening and weekends landline calls via BT Together option 1 for 5.5p per hour.
    Option to use the MSE call checker on this site making calls even cheaper.
    Option to move from both in the future due to no minimum contract.

    To me sounds a fairly decent deal though I guess terribly slow.
