Service cost

For a Ford Focus we've been quoted £229 for a full service at a large car dealer - this is the top level of service they offer, they have 3 levels but would not give me a clear list of what was included at each level. They also quoted £89 for an oil change as the car is 4 yrs old. Sounds a lot to me.

Looked at Kwik Fit too who charge £145 for a full service, including oil charge.

What do you think of these prices?

Thanks

You can look on the Ford ETIS site what is required:
    http://www.etis.ford.com/fordservice/home.do

A major service is just that. The Kwik-Fit one won't come anywhere near the main dealer one for that price and it won't include a stamp on the bodywork warranty page.

I know that when I compared an intermediate service at a local garage done to the same standard (same service and with original Ford parts) with the dealership, there was £2 in it. The local garage did an annual one that changed the fuel filter (which it didn't need) and didn't change the pollen filter which it did need in order to not fry the heater blower motor speed controller.

Thanks. I should have mentioned that the dealer I went to is not officially a Ford dealer - though it is where we bought the car from

£145 is reasonable, but this is crap fit and once they've got you in their grips, they'll tell you it needs brakes, exhaust and shock absorbers (which it most likely doesn't need)... Taking the cost up to nearly £300 or more.

Just as a very rough guide:

    Oil is around £35

You can get all the filters (service kit) for less than £15 online.... So £35 + £15 = £50 for a DIY service.

(don't forget they'll also get this stuff at 15%-40% off too

The garage will then add labour:
    2 hours labour £45 x 2 (at most)

They make it sound like rocket science, but that's pretty much all a service involves, they don't do all the little "checks" and "tweeks" they say they do.... All that is just sales talk to make you think they're going to do a better job.

If the car had it's major service at 3 years it only really needs a standard service. I work at a Ford main dealer in Liverpool and we only charge £133 for this. If you'd rather get a major service done then that's £186,there shouldn't really be that much difference in price for different parts of the country. Or for cars 4 years old or more (ie out of warranty) Ford RapidFit centres do a value service for £99 (£129 with MOT) which is the same as the standard service except that they don't replace the pollen filter, and you get a years roadside assistance included. Check http://www.ford.co.uk/valueservice to find your nearest participating dealer
    Hope this helps.

Thanks all. Keith, that sounds much more reasonable than I expected from a Ford dealer. I will look further into it.

I got mine serviced at a main dealer last year for £99 which included an MOT, Standard service, a years free breakdown, and a £20 M&S voucher.

They are still doing the deal (minus the vouchers) so I would say shop around.

As the cars out of warranty there is even less reason to use the main dealer but I would give them a call asking about any special deals for older cars. The smarter ones have a two tier pricing strategy to retain the older car business.

If they dont look for a good local independent.
